About me

I design, manufacture, and sell, solid hardwood boxes for a variety of uses. My purpose is to provide my customers with solid hard wood boxes, that are highly practical while having visual and tactile impact.

I have been making boxes for just over ten years, it started out as a hobby for freinds and family and has grown to such an extent that I have made over a thousand boxes.

I am based in a workshop on the edge of Dartmoor, Devon, in the UK

I challenge myself that no box should leave the workshop that I would not be proud to have in my home. If in its daily use, you can’t help but brush your fingers over the surface of one of my boxes then I have succeeded.

My belief is that in modern society poorly made products frequently masquerade as something they are not, often at exorbitant prices. My boxes are made to stand the test of time; they are not veneer over an mdf base that a scratch can make permanently unsightly but genuinely made in solid hardwood where even the inlays are deep enough to stand sanding and re-surfacing should the worst happen. I hope that they remain in use for years to come and they represent a little bit of craftsmanship that is handed on generation to generation.

You cannot do what I do without being passionate about wood, its use and ensuring that it remains a sustainable resource. I estimate that in my lifetime as a maker I might just use the equivalent of a large oak tree’s supply of wood. That said I intend to leave the planet as far as timber is concerned in better shape that I find it. To that end I only source timber from merchants who have strong sustainability ethics, and without making a ‘thing’ of it I contribute to the planting of the tree species that I use frequently in a woodland planting program.

I offer a variety of boxes and undertake box commissions in several woods with an assortment of linings and hardware possibilities. These are explained on my website; however I will not accept commissions that involve timbers on the Cites at risk or endangered species list. I am often asked for boxes in Macassar Ebony which is still available but is listed as vunerable so I am afraid I no longer work with it – however there are always other possibilities!

I trust you will enjoy your box for years to come!
