Inlaid Boxes

  • Compass - Wenge and Sycamore

  • These Inlaid boxes are a form of Intarsia. The lid of the box is carved and then a contrasting wood is inlaid. The technique is old, believed to stem from the 7th century when employed by Arab artists.

Largely replaced by marquetry which uses thin veneers to create decoration,
this technique lost ground because it was ultimately more time consuming.

  • Sailing - Walnut and Wenge

  • Peacock - Walnut and Wenge

  • Dragon - Walnut and Wenge

  • The advent of computer numerical control machines (CNC) has made this
    technique an option once again.

Everyday is a learning experience as I expand my understanding of the
capability of these machines. The boxes included here are tried and tested
    patterns create stunning solid-wood boxes.

  • Jewellery Box Sapele and Red Velvet

  • Have a play in the box builder to design and order your own box.

You can add one of three functional interiors to your box: watch, valet, jewellery or simply order just the box.

  • Valet box - Walnut and Blue Velvet

  • Watch box - Walnut and Blue Velvet

  • Girl in Hat - Sycamore and Walnut

  • More robust than a marquetry box as the inlay is 5mm deep, in the event that the pattern is damaged
they can be re-sanded and restored, not easy to do an a marquetry box where the veneer is often only 0.6mm thick over an mdf base.

The box is really beautiful and is as expected. MB Germany
